Marama Winder is an American writer, trained biologist, visual artist, multifaith minister and impassioned advocate for social and ecological justice, multicultural relationships and personal and global healing. She has lived in Aotearoa New Zealand for nearly 20 years. Her work is significantly influenced by life in two hemispheres and by her respected teachers from many sacred world traditions.
Called ‘a mystic activist’ by Maori colleagues, her writing, speaking and teaching promotes practical ways to restore our relationships with each other, the natural world and the sacred in the web of life. Her voice offers healing and wisdom for us to individually and collectively create a world of hope, beauty, and promise for present and future generations. Both active in the world and a practicing contemplative, her life is guided by a deep desire to serve humanity. Her work finds grounding in a passion for nature, culture, spirit and place.
In 1999, she was gifted a Maori name, Whetu Marama, which she held in respect for 10 years until blessed in a naming ceremony in the Hokianga with Kaumatua Pereme Porter, Matua Theodore Gray and Tohunga Pita Harrison. Describing her as a tohunga for ‘ara tipua’, the mystical path’, they guided her into the circle of wisdom keepers who work in sacred service with people and planet. She has received numerous awards of distinction for leadership, public speaking and her prolific published work. Marama has broadly supported Kawai Purapura for many years through her aroha, interspiritual invocations, popular and inspiring workshops and practical wisdom.
Jon Winder is cofounder of the Sephira Institute in Auckland, an author, leading mentor, counsellor, spiritual transformer and ordained multifaith minister. He is widely regarded for his unique mentoring, original group facilitation and championship of people and communities from leaders and teams to youth and families.
The foundation of his highly effective, creative and holistic guidance originates from the vibrancy of deep ecological principles and practices and the energy of spiritual vision. He has presented internationally on a vast range of topics in the fields of education, commerce and spiritual attunement. A storyteller and avid gardener, Jon’s early years in the Manawatu as the son of a sheep farmer were the formation for his life-long love of Nature and a deep concern for the wellbeing of people and planet from ecological, cultural and social perspectives.
Session 1: Gathering Women’s Wisdom: Healing Hearts~Healing Earth by Marama
Awakening our personal hearts leads to awakening the global heart. Women of all ages, cultures and life experiences have a unique place during this new birthing time for our civilization and planet. While we each carry the twin flames of masculine and feminine energy, women express knowledge, insight, wisdom and love in action in unique ways.
This workshop with Marama Winder calls all women to help usher in harmony and balance for humanity and all life. We will explore the relationship between women’s spirituality, soul care and the state of the world and share new and practical ways of sacred action. We will be in ceremony and celebrate who we are as women awakening, healing and bringing forward our manawa (heart), wairua (spirit), our unique gifts and our personal and collective wisdom to a new world. You may wish to bring a journal and a sacred object for the altar. Please join us!
Session 2: Our New Story by Marama and Jon
Living Into Our New Story; At this time in our personal and collective history, the old stories are falling away rapidly. We feel it, see it and are living it. While it is one thing to have known this immense transition was coming, it is another thing altogether to be living it now. While storms are rising from many directions, there are incredible stories of hope, creative promise and deep revelations as we reconnect with our Earth and each other in our global family. These new, emerging stories are supporting us to make meaning of our lives, our work and our actions during this time of transition into our collective future. All are invited to join Marama and Jon Winder to come together to begin to explore who we are now and how we move forward together in creating our new story.
Session 3: ‘Before the Flood’ – movie screening
The science is clear, but the future is not. Join us for a community screening of “Before The Flood” hosted by Marama Winder at Voices of the Sacred Earth Festival, in Lotus. The screening will begin at 9.00 pm.
From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Fisher Stevens and Academy Award-winning actor, environmental activist and U.N. Messenger of Peace Leonardo DiCaprio, “Before The Flood” presents a riveting account of the dramatic changes now occurring around the world due to climate change, as well as the actions we as individuals and as a society can take to prevent catastrophic disruption of life on our planet.
The film follows DiCaprio as he travels to five continents and the Arctic speaking to scientists, world leaders, activists and local residents to gain a deeper understanding of this complex issue and investigate concrete solutions to the most pressing environmental challenge of our time.
